In Iron Man 3, Tony Stark wrestles with the ramifications of the events of The Avengers (2012) during a national terrorism campaign on the United States led by the mysterious Mandarin. After a malevolent enemy known as the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) reduces his personal world to rubble, Tony must rely solely on instinct and ingenuity to avenge his losses and protect the people he loves. Along the way, Tony struggles with his own psychological issues, such as insomnia and post traumatic stress disorder, caused by the events of the previous Avengers film.

Iron Man 3 was a box office success, grossing over $1.2 billion worldwide, making it the second-highest-grossing film of 2013 and the sixteenth film to gross over $1 billion. It finished its theatrical run as the fifth-highest-grossing film of all time. The film received positive reviews from critics, with praise for its action sequences, Black's direction, and Downey's performance, though there was criticism for its portrayal of the Mandarin. The film received Best Visual Effects nominations at the Academy Awards and the BAFTA Awards.

Plot

The plot of Iron Man 3 follows Tony Stark/Iron Man, who faces a powerful enemy who destroys his personal world and forces him to go on a quest to find those responsible. Along the way, Tony discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Prologue

The film begins with a flashback to 1999, when Tony Stark meets two scientists at a New Year's Eve party in Switzerland: Maya Hansen (Rebecca Hall), who is working on a regenerative process called Extremis; and Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce), who is the founder of Advanced Idea Mechanics (AIM), a think tank that seeks Tony's support. Tony flirts with Maya and ignores Killian, who is left humiliated.

Present day

In the present day, Tony is suffering from insomnia and anxiety after his involvement in the Battle of New York with the Avengers. He spends his time building new suits of armor and neglecting his girlfriend Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), who is now the CEO of Stark Industries. Meanwhile, a terrorist known as the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) claims responsibility for a series of bombings around the world.

The attack on Tony's mansion

One of the bombings injures Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau), Tony's former bodyguard and now head of security at Stark Industries. In response, Tony publicly challenges the Mandarin and gives him his home address. The Mandarin sends three helicopters to attack Tony's mansion in Malibu, destroying it and trapping Tony under the rubble. Tony manages to escape in his prototype suit Mark 42, which flies him to rural Tennessee following a flight plan from his investigation into the Mandarin.

The investigation in Tennessee

The encounter with Harley

In Tennessee, Tony meets a young boy named Harley Keener (Ty Simpkins), who helps him repair his suit and investigate a local explosion that may be linked to the Mandarin. Tony discovers that the explosion was caused by an Extremis soldier, a human bomb enhanced by the experimental treatment that Maya was working on. Tony also learns that the Mandarin is not a real person, but a British actor named Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley), who is hired by Killian to be the face of his terrorist plot.

The capture and escape of Tony and Pepper

Tony traces the Mandarin's broadcasts to Miami, where he infiltrates Killian's headquarters. He is captured by Killian, who reveals himself as the true Mandarin and the leader of AIM. Killian explains that he survived his rejection by Tony in 1999 and used Maya's research to create Extremis, which he plans to use to create an army of super-soldiers and overthrow the U.S. government. He also reveals that he has kidnapped Pepper and injected her with Extremis, intending to make her his trophy and kill Tony once he has perfected the formula.

Tony escapes from his captivity with the help of Harley, who had hacked into his suit's remote control. He reunites with Rhodes, who had been stripped of his Iron Patriot armor by Killian's henchman Savin (James Badge Dale). Together, they fight their way through Killian's men and rescue the president, who was also kidnapped by Killian and replaced by an Extremis soldier posing as him.

The final showdown

Tony and Rhodes arrive at a shipyard where Killian intends to kill the president on live television. Tony summons all of his Iron Man suits, controlled remotely by JARVIS (Paul Bettany), to assist him and Rhodes in the battle. They are joined by Maya, who has a change of heart and tries to stop Killian, but is killed by him. Tony saves Pepper from falling to her death, but she is presumed dead when one of the suits explodes.

Tony faces off against Killian, who reveals that he is also an Extremis user and can regenerate from any injury. Tony traps him in one of his suits and detonates it, but Killian survives. He attacks Tony again, but is finally killed by Pepper, who survived the explosion and gained superhuman abilities from Extremis. Tony orders JARVIS to destroy all of his suits as a sign of his devotion to Pepper.

Production

The production of Iron Man 3 involved several challenges and changes from the previous films. Here are some of the highlights:

Development

Iron Man 3 was announced in October 2010, shortly after the release of Iron Man 2. Shane Black, who had previously worked with Robert Downey Jr. on Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005), was hired as the director and co-writer in February 2011, replacing Jon Favreau, who decided to focus on acting as Happy Hogan. Black described the film as a "techno-thriller" and a "Tom Clancy sort of approach" to the superhero genre, with a focus on Tony Stark's character development and his relationship with Pepper Potts.

Writing

Black co-wrote the screenplay with Drew Pearce, who had created the British TV series No Heroics, which parodied superhero tropes. The duo based their script on the "Extremis" storyline from the comics, written by Warren Ellis and illustrated by Adi Granov, which introduced a new origin for Iron Man and explored the consequences of his technology. They also drew inspiration from other comic arcs, such as "Demon in a Bottle", "Armor Wars", and "Iron Man vs. Mandarin".

The writers decided to make the Mandarin a different character from the comics, where he was a Chinese warlord with ten rings of power. They wanted to avoid the racial stereotypes associated with the character and make him more relevant to the modern world. They came up with the idea of making him a fake persona created by Killian, who was also a different character from the comics, where he was a minor villain who committed suicide after creating Extremis. They also added elements of humor and satire to the film, such as the scenes where Tony interacts with Harley and Trevor.

Casting

Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Jon Favreau, and Paul Bettany reprised their roles from the previous films as Tony Stark / Iron Man, Pepper Potts, James Rhodes / Iron Patriot, Happy Hogan, and JARVIS respectively. Downey Jr. also served as an executive producer on the film and had creative input on the script and the casting. He suggested Ben Kingsley for the role of the Mandarin, whom he had admired since seeing him in Sexy Beast (2000). Kingsley accepted the role after reading the script and finding it "full of twists and turns". He also enjoyed playing both Trevor and the Mandarin, saying that he "had a ball" with both characters.

Guy Pearce was cast as Aldrich Killian, whom he described as a "very enthusiastic fanboy" of Tony Stark who becomes a "very dangerous villain". Pearce said that he was not a fan of superhero films before joining Iron Man 3, but he liked working with Black and Downey Jr. Rebecca Hall was cast as Maya Hansen, whom she described as a "strong female character" who has a "complex relationship" with Tony Stark. Hall said that she was attracted to the role because of Black's writing and direction.

The other actors who joined the cast included James Badge Dale as Eric Savin / Coldblood-7, an Extremis soldier and Killian's right-hand man; William Sadler as President Matthew Ellis, the target of Killian's plot; Miguel Ferrer as Vice President Rodriguez, who is secretly working with Killian; Ty Simpkins as Harley Keener, a young boy who helps Tony in Tennessee; Wang Xueqi as Doctor Wu (as Wang Xueqi), a Chinese surgeon who helps Tony; and Shaun Toub as Ho Yinsen, Tony's friend and fellow captive from the first film, who appears in a flashback.

Filming

Filming for Iron Man 3 began in May 2012 in Wilmington, North Carolina at EUE/Screen Gems Studios. The film was shot under the working title Caged Heat. The production also filmed in Raleigh Studios in Los Angeles; Miami; Rose Hill, North Carolina; Cary, North Carolina; Oak Island, North Carolina; Washington D.C.; Beijing; Shanghai; Dania Beach, Florida; and Hollywood.

The film used various practical effects and stunt work, such as explosions, wire work, pyrotechnics, and car chases. The film also used extensive digital effects to create Iron Man's suits, which were mostly computer-generated instead of using physical suits like in the previous films. The visual effects were done by several companies, such as Weta Digital, Digital Domain, Scanline VFX, Trixter Film GmbH (Trixter), Framestore CFC (Framestore), Luma Pictures (Luma), The Embassy Visual Effects (The Embassy), and Method Studios (Method). The film's visual effects supervisor was Christopher Townsend, who had previously worked on Captain America: The First Avenger (2011).

Music

The music for Iron Man 3 was composed by Brian Tyler, who replaced John Debney and Ramin Djawadi, who had scored the previous two films. Tyler said that he wanted to create a "retro, rock 'n' roll" score that would reflect Tony Stark's personality and the film's tone. He also incorporated the classic Iron Man theme from the 1966 animated series into the score. Tyler conducted a 118-piece orchestra and a 40-person choir at Abbey Road Studios in London. He also made a cameo appearance in the film as a conductor at a beauty pageant.

Reception

Iron Man 3 received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. The film has an approval rating of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 335 reviews, with an average rating of 6.9/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "With the help of its charismatic lead, some impressive action sequences, and even a few surprises, Iron Man 3 is a witty, entertaining adventure and a strong addition to the Marvel canon." On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 62 out of 100 based on 44 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". On CinemaScore, audiences gave the film an average grade of "A" on an A+ to F scale.

The film was praised for its action sequences, Black's direction, Downey's performance, and its humor and twists. However, some critics and fans were disappointed or divided by the film's portrayal of the Mandarin, who was seen as either a clever subversion or a wasted opportunity. Some also felt that the film was too dark or too comedic for an Iron Man film.
